Open Educational Resources (OER) in university teaching: possibilities and benefits

Topic & procedure
Digital teaching/learning settings are becoming increasingly important at universities. As a result, lecturers are confronted with the need to convert their face-to-face courses to online formats or supplement them with digital elements. Open Educational Resources (OER) offer great added value here: these teaching/learning materials can be reused and further developed or adapted to specific teaching/learning contexts and individual learner needs. The development and provision of OER also offers the opportunity to make one's own teaching or name visible in the academic community (similar to open access publications). This sustainably improves access to education, which contributes to an open teaching/learning culture. Everyone benefits from OER: teachers and students alike. Despite these opportunities, the creation, sharing and use of OER at university level is still restrained and barely established. There are many reasons for this, e.g. individual uncertainties regarding legal, technical or didactic aspects. In this course, you will learn about the characteristics of open educational materials and reflect on their added value and challenges. Particular attention will be paid to copyright and open licensing (according to Creative Commons). In interactive exercises, you will learn how you can integrate openly licensed educational materials into your teaching and what you need to bear in mind when creating your own OER. You will also learn about the Lower Saxony OER portal www.twillo.de - a sustainable infrastructure for sharing open educational materials. Main topics:
- Key features of Open Educational Resources (OER)
- Basics of copyright and open licensing
- Integration of openly licensed educational materials into own works
- Publication of own works as OER
- Functions of the OER portal twillo
The organization and handling of the online event is carried out by Leibniz Universität Hannover.
This is a free offer for all LUH employees.
