On Wednesday, 06.03.2024, there was an entertaining networking event with an evening program on the topic “10 theses for the next 10 years of OER” as part of the OERcamp. The occasion was the tenth anniversary of the Alliance for Open Education. The focus of the event, which thrived entirely on the exchange between participants, was the question of what we need in terms of education for an open, digital society for the next 10 years?

Ten members of the Bündnis freie Bildung, including twillo, presented statements for discussion on what practitioners of digital and open teaching/learning materials in German-speaking countries would like to see in terms of education for an open, digital society over the next 10 years and what plans they themselves have. The theses were presented on stage and then discussed lively in three rounds at standing tables in the hall with changing participants. Discussion topics included the impact of AI tools on the culture of sharing, the stronger link between OER and education for sustainable development and the need for a state-funded German OER publisher.
twillo was represented with a thesis on the increased sustainability of open teaching through didactic metadata: Through a better description of teaching materials by means of metadata
- simplifies the potential reuse of open learning materials for teachers,
- the reuse of OER is strengthened,
- contributes to valuable self-reflection in university teaching.
The topic met with a strong response; among other things, participants asked themselves what information is actually hidden behind didactic metadata, reported very different experiences with the description of OER and wished for a relief in the description of OER through automatic (AI-based) fill-in suggestions.
