What is a good title?

A meaningful title not only makes it much easier to find a material, it also provides a good initial aid to deciding whether the material is suitable for your own teaching and learning context. Here are some tips that you should definitely bear in mind when choosing a title for your material:

  • Choose the title as precisely as possible and name the content in full
  • Include technical terms in the title.
  • Avoid creative titles that do not directly state the content. They may arouse interest, but they make it difficult to assess exactly what your material is about.
  • Avoid using non-meaningful words such as comparison, analysis, criticism.
  • Avoid abstract terms such as introduction, lesson/chapter 1, exercise part 3, summary 2.
  • Only mention the format or the software used if this is relevant for the use of the material (e.g.: "Exercise on democracy research with H5P"; but not: "Exercise on democracy research (presentation slides)". You can include this information in the metadata dialog under material type).
  • Please do not use the file name from your personal folder structure as the title.

Important: The requirements for a consistent and correct citation of your material are only fulfilled if the title information on the material matches that in the metadata.

If you were unable to include important information in the title, you can add it as keywords or key words (see FAQ How do I assign keywords and key words?).
