What are suitable or open file formats for OER?
Make your educational material available in as open a file format as possible by choosing easily editable and versionable file formats when saving. This makes it easier for other teachers to reuse content.
3 Criteria for open file formats are:
Open standard: Materials with an open standard are easy to edit, as most files can be opened and adapted using open source software and no proprietary software needs to be purchased.
Editability: Editable file formats allow direct adaptation and further development of the materials. See below for examples (however, a PDF, for example, can only be edited with difficulty).
Versionability: Versionable file formats make it possible to document, trace and even easily undo all changes made to the material.
Formats that fulfill all three aspects are, for example: .csv, .txt, .tex, .html, .md, .svg. Common formats that fulfill one point less are, for example:
- .docx, .xlsx, .ppsx, .pptx (Office Open XML for Microsoft Office files)
- .odt, .ods, .odg, .odp (Open Document Format of Open Office files)
