The project is funded as part of the MWK OER ini\u00adtia\u00adtive for the higher edu\u00adca\u00adtion sec\u00adtor. <\/p>\n\n<p>Every year, 2.8 mil\u00adlion ani\u00admals are used in 2,899 ani\u00admal exper\u00adi\u00adments in Ger\u00admany (Ani\u00admal\u00adTestInfo, mean value from 2017\u20132019). For some time now, ani\u00admal test\u00ading has been viewed crit\u00adi\u00adcally from a social and moral per\u00adspec\u00adtive (inflic\u00adtion of suf\u00adfer\u00ading on and instru\u00admen\u00adtal\u00adiza\u00adtion of ani\u00admals), but has also been crit\u00adi\u00adcized sci\u00aden\u00adtif\u00adi\u00adcally in some cases (trans\u00adfer\u00adabil\u00adity and qual\u00adity of research). The topic is there\u00adfore, like <em>ani\u00admal wel\u00adfare <\/em>- and increas\u00adingly also <em>ani\u00admal rights <\/em>- gen\u00ader\u00adally a socially con\u00adtro\u00adver\u00adsial issue, which is par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlarly impor\u00adtant in human, vet\u00aderi\u00adnary and den\u00adtal med\u00adi\u00adcine as well as in the nat\u00adural sci\u00adences, as this is where ani\u00admal exper\u00adi\u00adments are ulti\u00admately car\u00adried out. How\u00adever, <em>ani\u00admal ethics <\/em>as an estab\u00adlished branch of philo\u00adsoph\u00adi\u00adcal ethics also expresses itself very crit\u00adi\u00adcally on this topic from time to time, trig\u00adgered by Peter Singer\u2019s stan\u00addard work <em>Ani\u00admal Lib\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion<\/em>, among oth\u00aders. Ani\u00admal wel\u00adfare and ani\u00admal exper\u00adi\u00admen\u00adta\u00adtion are also top\u00adics of (med\u00adical) <em>research ethics<\/em>; as a result, these top\u00adics are also dealt with inten\u00adsively in the human\u00adi\u00adties.    <\/p>\n\n<p>Despite the pres\u00adence of these top\u00adics in med\u00adi\u00adcine and in the nat\u00adural sci\u00adences and human\u00adi\u00adties, com\u00adpar\u00ada\u00adtively lit\u00adtle atten\u00adtion is paid to alter\u00adna\u00adtive meth\u00adods to ani\u00admal exper\u00adi\u00adments, espe\u00adcially in teach\u00ading mate\u00adri\u00adals \u2014 even though skills in alter\u00adna\u00adtive meth\u00adods have become an inte\u00adgral part of the train\u00ading of all those who wish to work exper\u00adi\u00admen\u00adtally with ani\u00admals. In Lower Sax\u00adony alone, this applies to more than half (58%) of col\u00adleges and uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adties. In par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar, there is often a lack of con\u00adnec\u00adtion between the sci\u00aden\u00adtific and tech\u00adni\u00adcal prin\u00adci\u00adples of alter\u00adna\u00adtive meth\u00adods and eth\u00adi\u00adcal reflec\u00adtion and con\u00adsid\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion.  <\/p>\n\n<p>The Uni\u00adver\u00adsity of Vet\u00aderi\u00adnary Med\u00adi\u00adcine Han\u00adnover (TiHo, AG Hiebl) and the Han\u00adnover Med\u00adical School (MHH, AG Mertz) are there\u00adfore using this joint project to address an OER col\u00adlec\u00adtion on the topic of \u201cAni\u00admal wel\u00adfare and ethics\u201d, with an ini\u00adtial focus on the afore\u00admen\u00adtioned alter\u00adna\u00adtive meth\u00adods to ani\u00admal test\u00ading. ,<\/p>\n\n<p>The exper\u00adtise of the two appli\u00adcant work\u00ading groups will be com\u00adbined in order to pro\u00advide bar\u00adrier-free access to high-qual\u00adity OER mate\u00adri\u00adals for the increas\u00ading demand for infor\u00adma\u00adtion and teach\u00ading on the sub\u00adject of ani\u00admal wel\u00adfare in the lab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtory ani\u00admal sec\u00adtor. The archi\u00adtec\u00adture of the col\u00adlec\u00adtion is to be set up in such a way that it can be expanded to include other aspects of ani\u00admal wel\u00adfare, e.g. farm ani\u00admals or ani\u00admals kept pri\u00advately, espe\u00adcially as many eth\u00adi\u00adcal issues also arise in these areas. Other top\u00adics, such as \u201cAni\u00admal wel\u00adfare and the econ\u00adomy\u201d or \u201cAni\u00admal wel\u00adfare and pol\u00adi\u00adtics\u201d, could also be added.  <\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Com\u00admu\u00adnity build\u00ading<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>To ensure that the OER are tech\u00adni\u00adcally cor\u00adrect, a <em>two-stage peer review process <\/em>will be intro\u00adduced. In the first stage, the OER con\u00adtent will be reviewed by a spe\u00adcial\u00adist sci\u00aden\u00adtist from the Vir\u00adtual TiHo Cen\u00adtre for Alter\u00adna\u00adtive and Com\u00adple\u00admen\u00adtary Meth\u00adods to Ani\u00admal Exper\u00adi\u00adments (VZET) and by a sci\u00aden\u00adtist from the Ger\u00adman Soci\u00adety for Cel\u00adlu\u00adlar Biotech\u00adnol\u00adogy (DGZBT); the eth\u00adi\u00adcal con\u00adtent will be reviewed by Dr. Ger\u00adald Neitzke, a sci\u00aden\u00adtist from the Acad\u00ademy of Ethics in Med\u00adi\u00adcine (AEM) with ethics exper\u00adtise. Ger\u00adald Neitzke, a sci\u00aden\u00adtist from the Acad\u00ademy for Ethics in Med\u00adi\u00adcine (AEM) with knowl\u00adedge of ethics didac\u00adtics. A final eval\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtion by stu\u00addents takes place at the TiHo as part of the courses for the acqui\u00adsi\u00adtion of exper\u00adtise in lab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtory ani\u00admal sci\u00adence in accor\u00addance with \u00a716 of the Ani\u00admal Wel\u00adfare Exper\u00adi\u00admen\u00adtal Ani\u00admal Ordi\u00adnance. These courses are accred\u00adited by the pro\u00adfes\u00adsional asso\u00adci\u00ada\u00adtion (GV-SOLAS) and are struc\u00adtured as blended learn\u00ading courses in a flipped class\u00adroom for\u00admat.
