{"id":7364,"date":"2024-04-15T09:19:00","date_gmt":"2024-04-15T07:19:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.twillo.de\/blog\/metadata-and-the-sustainability-of-open-teaching\/"},"modified":"2025-06-05T16:14:26","modified_gmt":"2025-06-05T14:14:26","slug":"metadata-and-the-sustainability-of-open-teaching","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.twillo.de\/en\/blog\/metadata-and-the-sustainability-of-open-teaching\/","title":{"rendered":"Metadata and the sustainability of open teaching"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"teaser-text\">A new study by HIS-HE has inves\u00adti\u00adgated how didac\u00adtic meta\u00addata can con\u00adtribute to strength\u00aden\u00ading open teach\u00ading prac\u00adtice.<\/p>\n\n<p>While the infra\u00adstruc\u00adtures for open edu\u00adca\u00adtion, such as the wide range offered by the <a href=\"http:\/\/twillo.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">twillo por\u00adtal<\/a>, have been fur\u00adther dif\u00adfer\u00aden\u00adti\u00adated for years, the re-use of open teach\u00ading mate\u00adri\u00adals in the higher edu\u00adca\u00adtion sec\u00adtor seems to remain at a con\u00adsis\u00adtently low level. It is unclear how a <strong>broader re-use of open teach\u00ading and learn\u00ading mate\u00adri\u00adals<\/strong> (Open Edu\u00adca\u00adtional Resources, OER) can be achieved. One fac\u00adtor that has received too lit\u00adtle atten\u00adtion to date is the index\u00ading of OER. The unpop\u00adu\u00adlar task of a dif\u00adfer\u00aden\u00adti\u00adated descrip\u00adtion of OER with meta\u00addata is of cen\u00adtral impor\u00adtance when it comes to the sus\u00adtain\u00adable pro\u00advi\u00adsion and reuse of OER. This is the con\u00adclu\u00adsion of a study on didac\u00adtic meta\u00addata in OER and teach\u00ading por\u00adtals, which was car\u00adried out in the con\u00adtext of twillo and pro\u00advides an <strong>overview of the cur\u00adrent prac\u00adtice of tag\u00adging OER<\/strong>.    <\/p>\n\n<p>High-qual\u00adity offer\u00adings of open uni\u00adver\u00adsity teach\u00ading depend on numer\u00adous fac\u00adtors, not only in the con\u00adtext of the twillo por\u00adtal. Open teach\u00ading and learn\u00ading offer\u00adings require suit\u00adable pre\u00adreq\u00adui\u00adsites on an infra\u00adstruc\u00adtural, tech\u00adni\u00adcal, orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtional and didac\u00adtic level, but these are at best a <em>sine qua<\/em> non for the suc\u00adcess of open uni\u00adver\u00adsity teach\u00ading. In order for open edu\u00adca\u00adtion to become sus\u00adtain\u00adable and for OER to be reused in a vari\u00adety of ways, fur\u00adther frame\u00adwork con\u00addi\u00adtions must also be guar\u00adan\u00adteed in the sense of a <em>con\u00addi\u00adtio per quam<\/em>. In order to improve the con\u00addi\u00adtions for open teach\u00ading, it is par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlarly impor\u00adtant to make it <strong>as easy as pos\u00adsi\u00adble<\/strong> for teach\u00aders to find open teach\u00ading and learn\u00ading mate\u00adri\u00adals that they can use for their own courses.   <\/p>\n\n<p>Teach\u00aders can only check inter\u00adnet doc\u00adu\u00adments, videos, images and other learn\u00ading objects pro\u00advided on OER por\u00adtals such as twillo for reusabil\u00adity with a man\u00adage\u00adable amount of effort if the mate\u00adri\u00adals are <strong>more than just super\u00adfi\u00adcially indexed<\/strong>. Teach\u00ading and learn\u00ading mate\u00adri\u00adals that do not con\u00adtain any accom\u00adpa\u00adny\u00ading infor\u00adma\u00adtion on the con\u00adtext of ori\u00adgin, access and license rights, didac\u00adtics or tech\u00adnol\u00adogy are not very trans\u00adpar\u00adent for poten\u00adtial reusers and require reusers to carry out a time-con\u00adsum\u00ading case-by-case exam\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtion. In order to keep the nec\u00ades\u00adsary effort for poten\u00adtial reusers to a min\u00adi\u00admum, <strong>mean\u00ading\u00adful meta\u00addata is required<\/strong>. Didac\u00adtic meta\u00addata is par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlarly impor\u00adtant for sub\u00adse\u00adquent use in spe\u00adcific courses.   <\/p>\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/his-he.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HIS Insti\u00adtute for Higher Edu\u00adca\u00adtion Devel\u00adop\u00adment (HIS-HE)<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vcrp.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vir\u00adtual Cam\u00adpus Rhineland-Palati\u00adnate (VCRP)<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orca.nrw\/ueber-uns\/team\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">office of the state por\u00adtal ORCA.nrw<\/a> and the foun\u00adda\u00adtion itself inves\u00adti\u00adgated the ques\u00adtions as part of a coop\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion funded by the <a href=\"https:\/\/stiftung-hochschullehre.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Foun\u00adda\u00adtion for Inno\u00adva\u00adtion in Higher Edu\u00adca\u00adtion<\/a>,<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>which approaches cur\u00adrently exist for map\u00adping the didac\u00adtic dimen\u00adsions of OER in meta\u00addata stan\u00addards,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>in what form didac\u00adtic sce\u00adnar\u00adios can be described in uni\u00adver\u00adsity teach\u00ading and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>which didac\u00adtic (min\u00adi\u00admum) spec\u00adi\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtions are nec\u00ades\u00adsary and help\u00adful to ensure greater re-use of OER.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Based on <strong>dif\u00adfer\u00aden\u00adti\u00adated desk research and a qual\u00adi\u00adta\u00adtive sur\u00advey of eleven experts<\/strong> in the con\u00adtext of guided inter\u00adviews, the recently pub\u00adlished report\u00adThe report Didac\u00adtic Meta\u00addata in OER and Teach\u00ading Por\u00adtals, which has just been pub\u00adlished, is based on dif\u00adfer\u00aden\u00adti\u00adated desk research and a qual\u00adi\u00adta\u00adtive sur\u00advey of eleven experts <strong>in<\/strong> the con\u00adtext of guided inter\u00adviews.
