Which CC licenses are suitable for OER?

As materials can be most easily integrated into teaching/learning settings if they can be modified and redistributed without far-reaching restrictions, a particularly open CC license for OER makes sense. The licenses CC 0, CC BY, CC BY SA allow editing and use for any purpose and thus correspond particularly well to the pedagogical understanding of OER.

The following figure gives you an overview of the openness of materials in descending order from license CC 0 to classic copyright protection (© all rights reserved).

The dark green area represents licenses that allow the sharing, modification and combination of materials for non-commercial and commercial purposes (CC0, CC BY and CC BY SA).

The licenses in the light green area also allow sharing, modifying and combining, but exclude commercial use (CC BY NC and CC BY NC SA).

The licenses in the yellow area do not allow any changes to the material. Only sharing is permitted here (CC BY ND and CC BY ND NC).

The red area represents copyrighted material. This may (generally) only be modified, used and distributed by its author. In principle, any use of copyrighted content is therefore subject to consent and often also to remuneration. Exceptions are provided by the so-called "limitation rules" of copyright law (further information on this can be found on twillo in the OER Basics section).

Graphic shows openness of licenses: green at the top (most open, e.g. CC0), red at the bottom (all rights reserved). Symbols for 'Share', 'Edit', 'Commercial'.
