How can sci­ence top­ics be incor­po­rated into teach­ing in a play­ful, col­lab­o­ra­tive, and engag­ing way? In the eduEscapeGame Lab for sci­ence edu­ca­tion, par­tic­i­pants develop their own small escape game tai­lored to their teach­ing con­text.

The lab is jointly oper­ated by ORCA.nrw and twillo, and is designed to pro­vide edu­ca­tors with an acces­si­ble intro­duc­tion to design­ing and cre­at­ing their own eduEscapeGames.

The two-day in-per­son event will take place on Sep­tem­ber 24 and 25, 2026, in Bochum and is aimed at teach­ers from North Rhine-West­phalia and Lower Sax­ony, par­tic­u­larly those spe­cial­iz­ing in biol­ogy, physics, and chem­istry edu­ca­tion, as well as related fields of sci­ence edu­ca­tion.

The lab focuses on the hands-on devel­op­ment of orig­i­nal mate­ri­als. Par­tic­i­pants receive guid­ance as they develop ideas, design mate­ri­als, and cre­ate an ini­tial pro­to­type. This work can be done indi­vid­u­ally or col­lab­o­ra­tively with other par­tic­i­pants. The con­tent may address var­i­ous top­ics in sci­ence edu­ca­tion, such as issues related to cli­mate ethics or inclu­sion.

No prior knowl­edge of escape games or Open Edu­ca­tional Resources (OER) is required. To help you pre­pare, there will be a one-hour online intro­duc­tion to the basic con­cepts and build­ing blocks of eduEscapeGames. All impor­tant infor­ma­tion will also be pro­vided in a hand­out.

The mate­ri­als cre­ated in the lab can then be pub­lished as OER.
