About the Event

The annual conference of the Society for Media in Science (GMW) will take place from September 21 to 23, 2026 (hybrid) at the University of Applied Sciences Campus Wien. Under the title “Higher Education in Transition: Lifelong Learning and Academic Practice in the Age of AI—Organizational, Social, and Didactic Transformation,” the event will address changes in teaching as well as current challenges in research and the organizational structure of higher education.

twillo’s contribution: Open Educational Practice in the Context of AI-Driven Change. Findings from an Exploratory Stakeholder Survey

AI applications offer a wide range of possibilities for creating and editing open educational resources (OER), although these have not yet been examined in detail through empirical research. In a mixed-methods survey conducted in 2025 as part of the OER network twillo, researchers investigated how generative AI applications can be productively used for open education. The results of three quantitative online surveys show that AI tools are already being used for tasks such as text correction, translation, and image generation. Over 60% of respondents attributed high potential to the use of AI for the further development of OER. At the same time, legal uncertainties, content-related challenges, and pragmatic difficulties were identified as significant barriers to the effective use of AI in OER production. In addition, the survey revealed further challenges in the areas of pedagogy, open education, and AI competencies, which should be addressed within the context of organizational, social, and didactic transformation processes in (open) higher education in light of generative AI.
